John Odom is one of Raleigh's most recognized and respected
public servants.
In 1993, John Odom was first elected to the Raleigh City Council in District B,
which covers the northeastern part of the city. He served for an unprecedented
five terms, including stints as deputy mayor and mayor pro-tem. In those
positions, he was known for having an easygoing manner and willingness to work
with other members of the City Council.
In 2003, Odom ran for Mayor of the City of Raleigh against incumbent Charles
Meeker, but was narrowly defeated.
He was the executive director of the Greater Raleigh Merchants Association and
the owner of three Meineke car care centers. In addition to his business
career, Odom is also a decorated Vietnam War Veteran, serving from 1967-1969.
Never losing sight of his commitment to public service, Odom, was the
Republican nominee for State Insurance Commissioner in 2008.
Odom was elected to the Raleigh City Council in 2009.
