Road Safety Where Teen Killed Under Review

City of Raleigh officials are looking into the safety of a road where a teenager was killed last week...

Residents in that area said they hope the City will add a traffic signal or crosswalk there to allow pedestrians to get from the homes on one side of Durant Road to the businesses on the other. The nearest crosswalk is a few hundred yards away...

Raleigh Councilman John Odom said the accident is a wake-up call to look at all future crosswalks in the City, and he plans to raise the issue at the next Council meeting.

"I think it's important that we continue to look at how we build our crosswalks, where we build our crosswalks and make sure they're amenable and available to all the citizens," he said...

Hillsborough Street bike lanes move forward

The Raleigh City Council’s public works committee members voted unanimously to support bike lanes for Hillsborough Street. If the plan gets final approval from council and the state Department of Transportation, there will be dedicated bike lanes along the section of the street fronting N.C. State University...

...According to city data, the Hillsborough Street renovation is ahead of schedule and under budget. District B councilor John Odom said during the meeting that if the city can keep the project on schedule and on budget and still put in the bike lanes, than there was no reason not to do it...

...“If we’re going to put bicycle lanes anywhere, than we should put them near the students,” Odom said, eliciting applause from the 18 bicycle advocates who showed up for Tuesday evening’s meeting...

Price of new Raleigh building questioned

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Most agree that Raleigh's police and fire departments need more space and more modern facilities, and the city is working on a state of the art public safety building with a $205m price tag.

The design for the 17-story Clarence Lightner Public Safety Center is impressive, but digging into the blueprints, some wonder if it's a little too impressive...

..."I just don't see how this is an efficient use of public resources," said Gaylord. "It seems to me we've designed the Taj Mahal."

Raleigh council talks of higher taxes

Garbage-disposal politics wins for Odom

One of the first things John Odom did after unseating incumbent Rodger Koopman in Tuesday's Raleigh City Council election was make good on a campaign promise.

Odom gave away a garbage disposal. Well, he gave away a $100 gift certificate to Briggs Hardware store to Frank Tortora, a Raleigh lawyer who entered a raffle on Odom's campaign Web site to win the disposal.

North Raleigh Farmers Market goes year-round...

There's good news today for farmers market fans. The North Raleigh Farmers Market has been extended to year-round.

Because of the change, the market's hours have also been tweaked. Starting immediately, the market will be open Wednesdays 2 to 6 p.m. The farmers market meets in the Falls River shopping center off Durant Road.
